With the mixed of cultures, races, religion and nationalities in Singapore, one need not worry about where to eat but what to eat from the hundreds of varieties of food!
Cheap and delicious food does not cost more than $5 (inclusive of soft drinks) at the hawker centers or coffeshops (Kopi Tiam - a local term in dialect for coffeeshop). Price and food names are clearly displayed in English/Chinese at the food stalls and you just need to order the food and indicate your table number (unless it is self-service).
Typically for about $20, you could eat till you drop and come back for another round of different food the next day.
The noted Newton Hawker centre is for tourists. It is recommended to avoid it as the food is more expensive there and there are many more places that serve the same food and taste just as good or even better.
If you must have an alcoholic drink, try the local brew - Tiger beer. Alcoholic drink is expensive in Singapore and a bottle or a can of Tiger beer will cost around S$5.
